Company History
In the early 1990s, a partnership was formed between Kvaerner Chemetics and Paprican (Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada) to develop a different kind of pulp liquor analyzer. The new technology used infrared light to penetrate the pulp liquor and the resulting pattern of light absorbance was picked up by a spectrometer and analyzed. From this analysis the properties of various chemical compounds in the pulp liquor could be determined.
Kvaerner and Paprican jointly obtained a patent for this new technology (US Patent 6339222). In 2002 Kvaerner sold their process control business to ABB Analytical, who assumed 50% of the patent.
During this time Tom Sands Consulting Inc. was established to provide uninterrupted service and support to existing digester control package customers. When ABB purchased the infrared technology from Kvaerner, Tom Sands Consulting Inc. was contracted to assist with the design, installation and start-up of their new systems.
In 2007 ABB selected Tom Sands Consulting Inc. as the exclusive provider of the infrared analyzer product for pulp and paper worldwide.
In 2008, Tom Sands Consulting Inc. became FITNIR Analyzers Inc. Tom Sands is CEO of FITNIR, bringing his 32 years of experience in the pulp industry to the new company.
